GARDENING GUIDE
Outdoor Plants
Outdoor plant success depends on climate, hardiness, sun exposure, soil, drainage, irrigation and mature plant size.
Climate and hardiness
Use locally appropriate hardiness information and consider heat, frost, wind and seasonal rainfall.
Sun exposure
Full sun, part sun, part shade and full shade describe different growing conditions. Observe the site through the day.
Soil and drainage
Heavy clay, compacted fill, sand and amended garden soil behave differently. Drainage problems should be addressed before installation.
Mature size
Account for future canopy, root spread, pathway clearance, walls, utilities, fences and nearby structures.
Plant-safety note: Plant toxicity varies by species and may affect pets or children. Verify the exact botanical species before placing a plant where ingestion is possible.
