GARDENING GUIDE

Indoor Plants

Plan indoor greenery around the light the room really receives, not the light you wish it received.

Start with light

  • Bright direct light and bright indirect light are not the same.
  • North-, east-, south- and west-facing windows behave differently through the year.
  • Distance from a window can dramatically reduce usable light.

Containers and drainage

Choose a pot with appropriate drainage and enough root volume. Decorative cachepots are useful, but standing water around roots can cause decline.

Watering method

Check soil moisture and plant condition instead of watering on a rigid calendar. Season, pot material, root health and indoor temperature all change water use.

Humidity and airflow

Some tropical foliage tolerates ordinary indoor humidity; other plants perform better away from heating vents, cold drafts or very dry air.

Plant-safety note: Plant toxicity varies by species and may affect pets or children. Verify the exact botanical species before placing a plant where ingestion is possible.
